About Sunnyvale Rod & Gun Club
Since 1959, the Sunnyvale Rod & Gun Club has served shooters from its foothill site in Cupertino, California, opposite the Stevens Creek Reservoir (15 miles west of downtown San Jose, CA). The Sunnyvale Rod & Gun Club is non-profit dedicated to providing both public shooters and its members a safe and fun place to pursue the shooting sports. We offer informal and competitive rifle, pistol, and shotgun shooting to the public and welcome shooters of all experience levels. Unfortunately, we do not rent or sell firearms or ammunition and we do not offer lessons.
The club offers three venues or facilities to public shooters and members alike. We have a 100 yard Rifle/Pistol Range that offers shooters both steel and paper targets, five Trap Fields, and a 5-Stand. Many different activities take place at these locations, including informal shooting, organized competitions, weekly leagues, and more. Come visit us and see what is available!
The Sunnyvale Rod & Gun Club has been member-run and organized since 1959 and is always welcoming of new members. Members are required to work periodically throughout the year as well as help maintain the facilities. Benefits of membership include use of the facilities at other hours, cheaper shooting rates, and the ability to purchase firearms and ammunition in group buys. For more information on the time commitments and other details, please see our "Join Us" page for more information.
Membership
Basic membership requirements are that applicants must be at least 18 years of age, a US citizen, an NRA member, and not be a convicted felon. There are two types of memberships:
- Regular Membership ($150/year + one time $500 initiation fee): Regular members contribute directly to the club by performing work and range duty. A club member is required to sponsor your application to join the club. Applicants who don't already know a member, can visit us during public hours and start making friends. The Probate Membership is the first of two stages in a sequence towards becoming a Full Member of the club. Annual dues are currently $150 per year.
- Probate Members are required to complete a self-directed Qualification Book to move from Probate to Associate member (and then to Full member) in the club. Once all the qualifications are completed and reviewed the Probate will be voted upon for advancement to Associate Member at a General Club Meeting.
- Probate Members may shoot at current member rates during public shooting hours, and may only shoot during members-only time with an Associate, Full or Life Member present to provide oversight. Probate members may attend club functions or join in club activities, a list of which may be found in the monthly club newsletter.
- Probates may not advance faster than 6 months, and must advance within 1 year. If a Probate does not advance in time, they will be dropped from the club.
- Special Membership ($600/year + one time $500 initiation fee): Special Membership is designed for people who are unable to attend to the required duties and work parties around the club. There are a limited number of these memberships available. Special Members are eligible to shoot at member rates when the club is open, and may only shoot during members-only time when an Associate, Full or Life Member is present to provide oversight. Immediate family members may join the Special member in shooting at the club, with the same restrictions. Special members may join in club activities, a list of which is published in the monthly newsletter. New applicants must appear before (be vetted by) the Board of Directors for a special membership before an intake vote of the club’s membership can be held. Annual dues are currently $600 per year.
As an all-volunteer working club we sometimes have imbalances in our membership's contribution of time at either the shotgun fields or the rifle/pistol range. To address this we may have applicants commit to a specific duty before they are invited to join the club.
All applicants must pay a one-time, non-refundable initiation fee of $500 when accepted into the club. Our membership year is July 1st to June 30th with an annual membership renewal period near the end of the membership year.
If interested in becoming a member, please contact the Membership Officer via email and schedule a time to meet at the next available General Meeting. The Membership Officer may not have availability at the next month, and may have to book you several months in advance.
