All about Metal Madness Shooting Sports Association
The Game & Ranges
The sport is unique for its randomized, high-speed format. A standard match consists of 10 different stages (lanes).
-
Target System: Each lane features several numbered steel plates. Shooters must hit these plates in precise numerical order.
-
Randomization: With over 60,000 possible plate configurations, no two stages feel the same, preventing shooters from simply memorizing a pattern.
-
The Facility (Grand Rivers): The "home" range in Kentucky features paved, covered shooting lanes, allowing for competition in various weather conditions.
Rules & Scoring
Metal Madness is one of the few shooting sports where the goal is to be as fast as a "madman" while maintaining perfect discipline.
-
Timing: Scoring is based on the total time taken to clear the plates.
-
Penalties: Missed plates or hitting plates out of sequence result in time penalties (typically 2 seconds per error).
-
Firearms: The sport is restricted to .22 rimfire rifles and handguns. This keeps the cost of ammunition low and recoil non-existent, making it ideal for youth and beginners.
Services & Programs
-
Youth Leagues: MMSSA is heavily involved in youth shooting sports, offering a structured environment for kids to learn firearm safety and competitive skills.
-
Fundraisers: The association frequently partners with organizations like the MidwayUSA Foundation to host "Come and Try" style fundraisers where equipment and ammunition are often provided for a small donation.
-
Accessibility: Because the physical demands are low compared to "run-and-gun" sports, Metal Madness is highly accessible to shooters with limited mobility or those who prefer a stationary shooting position.
