All about Bonnyville Shooting Sports Association
Facilities and Ranges:
The BSSA offers a diverse set of ranges catering to a wide array of shooting disciplines:
- Handgun and Rimfire Rifle Range: This is a 50m range, which includes benches at the 25m mark, and offers a shelter for inclement weather. Centerfire rifles and shotguns are not permitted on this range.
- Centerfire Rifle Range: This range is certified for calibers up to .338 Lapua and black powder up to .50 caliber. It features backstops at 25m, 100m, 200m, and 300m, allowing for various long-distance shooting activities.
- Shotgun Ranges: The club has trap and skeet fields. The trap range is a standard American Trap 5-position range, equipped with voice activation for all five shooters, powered by solar energy.
- Archery Range: A recently constructed 100-meter archery range is available, complete with an elevated tower, catering to archery enthusiasts.
The club emphasizes that all work, repairs, and maintenance at the facility are performed by volunteers, which helps keep membership rates low.
Services and Programs:
The Bonnyville Shooting Sports Association provides several services and programs to its members and the wider community:
- Membership: The BSSA is a members-only club. Membership includes CCFR (Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights) insurance.
- Guest Policy: Members are permitted to bring a maximum of two participating guests, who must be under the member's direct supervision. Guests are allowed a maximum of two visits, must sign a guest book, and pay a user fee per visit. Non-shooting spectators are also allowed, provided they comply with club rules.
- "Black Badge" Courses: The club offers Black Badge courses, which are typically associated with practical shooting disciplines like IPSC (International Practical Shooting Confederation), allowing participants to compete in these types of events.
- Events and Competitions: The BSSA regularly hosts various shooting competitions, including qualifiers for major events like IPSC. They also organize special events such as "Ladies' Day at the Gun Range," providing an opportunity for women of all skill levels to learn about firearms in a supportive environment. These events often include safety briefings, demonstrations, and opportunities to try shooting various firearms, including handguns and rifles, with no prior license required for participation during these supervised sessions.
- Community Engagement: The BSSA actively engages with the community, hosting anniversary celebrations with food, music, and activities for families, often with proceeds benefiting local organizations like the food bank.
The Bonnyville Shooting Sports Association aims to provide a safe, well-maintained, and enjoyable environment for sport shooting, catering to a diverse range of disciplines and skill levels.
