All about Winnipeg Revolver and Pistol Association

Facilities and Ranges:

The WRPA boasts several ranges catering to different firearms and shooting styles:

  • West Rifle Range (The Barry Pearson West Rifle Range): This is an outdoor baffled rifle range designed for full-bore rifles up to the .338 Lapua Magnum group, with the exception of .50 BMG. Shooters can place free-standing target stands anywhere along the range, ensuring shots land in the earth berm at the back. Buffalo board backers are available for targets.
  • 25/50M Pistol Range (including Steel Plates – Ranges 3 & 4): This range is specifically for pistols and .22 rimfire rifles. It accommodates full loads and magnum calibers. Target hardpoints are set at 25 and 50 yards, and buffalo board backers are provided. There are separate areas for knock-down and hanging steel plates. Shooters are reminded of the increased ricochet chance when shooting steel and are asked to reset targets after use. The entire pistol range is controlled as one area for target setting. Handguns firing rifle rounds (e.g., Remington XP-100) and military hardball (steel core) ammunition are not permitted.
  • 50M Multipurpose Range (Range 2): This range is primarily for .22 caliber rimfire rifles when shooting from the 50m line. Pistols can be used from the 25m firing line or closer to the backstop, with targets placed at the backstop. Safety gates at each side of the range must be secured across walkways when the 50m line is in use.
  • 50M Clay Sports Range (Range #1 – Shotgun): This range is dedicated to engaging clay targets with shotguns. Both hand clay pigeon throwers and manually or electronically operated trap throwers are allowed, provided they are used safely. Shot larger than #6, buckshot, and single projectiles are prohibited. The club has also announced the addition of 5-Stand shooting starting in 2023, indicating an expansion of their clay target offerings.
  • 20YD Indoor Pistol / Smallbore Range: This climate-controlled indoor range is available on specific evenings. It features stationary target frames at 20 yards. Handguns, rifles with pistol caliber with mid-range loads, and .22 rimfire rifles are permitted. Military steel core or specialty factory loads, magnum or hot reloads, and double action shooting are not allowed. Shooters must demonstrate the ability to contain all shots on the target.

Services and Disciplines:

The WRPA offers a variety of services and supports several shooting disciplines:

  • Membership: The club offers individual, junior, and family memberships. New members typically pay an initiation fee in addition to annual dues. Membership is valid for the calendar year.
  • New Member Application Process: The WRPA facilitates the application process for new members, requiring a Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) and contact information for personal references. Appointments can be scheduled with the membership chairman for guidance.
  • Variety of Shooting Disciplines: The club prides itself on offering the most number of different ranges and shooting disciplines in the province. These include:
    • ISSF/NRA Pistol Shooting: This encompasses various precision pistol events, such as Standard Pistol, Centre-fire Pistol, and NRA "Bullseye" .45 Pistol ("Canadian 600"). These disciplines involve shooting one-handed and unsupported at various distances and timings, with scores based on accuracy.
    • Clay Target Shooting: As indicated by the 50M Clay Sports Range and the introduction of 5-Stand, shotgun sports are a significant part of the club's activities.
    • Rifle Shooting: Both full-bore and .22 rimfire rifle shooting are supported.
    • Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS) and IDPA: The club has historically hosted results for these action-oriented shooting sports, suggesting active participation and events in these disciplines.
  • Events and Competitions: The WRPA regularly hosts various competitions and has a history of holding major events in Manitoba.
  • Member Communication: The club keeps members informed about events, matches, coaching clinics, and other relevant information through its website, emails, and newsletters.
  • Volunteer-Run Organization: Being volunteer-run, the club emphasizes that membership fees are reinvested directly into the club's facilities and operations, providing value to its members.

The Winnipeg Revolver and Pistol Association stands as a dedicated community for firearms enthusiasts, prioritizing safety, responsible shooting, and the enjoyment of various shooting sports.
