Description

All about USI Public Rifle Pistol Range

Facilities:

USI facilities typically include:

  • Rifle Ranges: Dedicated outdoor rifle ranges, often with covered shooting positions. These ranges commonly have target stands at multiple distances, such as 25, 50, 75, and 100 yards, to accommodate various rifle calibers and shooting disciplines. The California location boasts 45 benches on its rifle range, with some being dual-use for standing rifle and long-distance pistol.
  • Pistol Ranges: Both indoor and outdoor pistol ranges are usually available. The indoor ranges are often climate-controlled (heated) and may have amenities like an air filtration system. Outdoor pistol ranges may feature steel targets and allow shooters to set their own distances up to about 50 feet. The California public pistol range has 60 benches with covered shooting positions for targets up to 50 feet.
  • Shotgun Sports: USI is well-known for its shotgun facilities, including:
    • Trap: A popular clay target discipline where targets are thrown away from the shooter.
    • Skeet: Involves targets thrown from two "houses" in varying trajectories.
    • 5 Stand Clays: A more dynamic shotgun sport similar to sporting clays, with five stations and multiple target throwers.
  • Clubhouse Amenities: Beyond the ranges, USI facilities often feature:
    • A bar and kitchen.
    • Meeting rooms for club activities and events.
    • Ample parking.

Services and Operations:

USI aims to be accessible to a wide range of shooters, from experienced enthusiasts to those new to the sport. Key services and operational aspects include:

  • Public Access: A significant aspect of USI is that its rifle and pistol ranges, as well as some shotgun fields, are often open to the public, not just members. This makes it a great place for casual shooters or those looking to try out shooting.
  • Safety Orientation: For public use of the rifle and pistol ranges, new shooters are typically required to complete a safety orientation. This often involves reviewing liability waivers, watching firearm safety and range operation videos, and completing an online test. Upon successful completion, a "Blue Card" (or similar identification) is issued, which must be presented on subsequent visits along with a driver's license. This ensures all users are aware of and adhere to safety protocols.
  • Range Fees: There is usually a per-person, per-day range fee for using the rifle and pistol ranges. For shotgun sports, fees are typically per round (e.g., per 25 targets).
  • Membership: While open to the public, USI is often owned and operated by a consortium of several affiliated shooting clubs (e.g., Bay Point Rod and Gun Club, Brentwood Rod and Gun Club, Concord Sportsmen's Club, Diablo Rod and Gun Club, and Walnut Creek Sportsmen's Club in California). Becoming a member of one of these affiliated clubs usually grants access to benefits such as discounted range fees, ammunition, and shooting supplies.
  • Firearm and Ammunition Rules: Strict safety rules are enforced, including:
    • All firearms must be handled safely, unloaded, and with actions open when entering or leaving the shooting area.
    • Eye and ear protection are mandatory for all shooters and spectators on the ranges.
    • Specific ammunition restrictions may apply, such as no armor-piercing or steel-core ammunition. Rapid fire and cross-range shooting are generally prohibited.
    • Holsters are typically not allowed unless for specific organized events (e.g., law enforcement training or certain action pistol competitions).
    • Firearms must be cased and uncased at the shooting stations only.
  • Instruction and Training: USI may offer private firearms instruction. For more advanced or specialized shooting, like action pistol, participants may need to attend specific orientation and safety classes.
  • Retail/Supplies: The facilities often have a retail shop where shooters can purchase targets, ammunition, hearing protection, eye protection, and other shooting supplies at competitive prices. However, USI typically does not rent or loan firearms; shooters must bring their own.
  • Events and Competitions: Member clubs often host a variety of recreational shooting and social events throughout the year, including organized competitions in various disciplines.

The USI Public Rifle Pistol Range serves as a vital resource for the shooting community, providing well-maintained ranges and a strong emphasis on safety and responsible firearm handling.
