All about Southington Hunt Club and Training Facility
Ranges and Training Areas:
The facility boasts a vast area, offering a variety of ranges for different distances and purposes:
- Long-Range Precision: Includes a 1000-yard range (open for special events) and a 700-yard range with various steel targets for marksmanship and movement-to-contact/react-to-contact drills.
- Carbine/Pistol: Features multiple multi-purpose small arms ranges from 25 to 350 yards, rated up to .50 caliber machine gun. A popular 100/300-yard range is available, often equipped with steel targets.
- Tactical Training: Offers specialized areas for complex scenarios, including:
- A 350-yard live fire, vehicle maneuver area for mounted and dismounted operations.
- An Urban Combat Training Area with adjacent helicopter landing zones.
- Over 900 acres of mounted and dismounted training areas and off-road trails.
- A 40-acre lake and cliffs for waterborne or high-angle operations and marksmanship.
Facilities and Services:
The Southington Hunt Club is primarily focused on professional training but also offers public access on select dates.
- Training and Clientele: The facility's primary mission is to serve as a training venue for local and national firearms instructors, law enforcement agencies, federal agencies, military units, and civilian organizations.
- Training Amenities: It includes a large 2,500 square foot covered classroom and a smaller 500 square foot indoor classroom with a kitchen.
- Access: It operates as a private multi-function facility, only open to the general public for practice and training on specific, posted "Open Range" days. Range rentals are available for private events and training classes.
- Safety Protocol: The club enforces a strict "cold range" policy for its public days, meaning firearms must remain unloaded unless instructed otherwise by a Range Safety Officer (RSO). Large calibers like .50 BMG are typically permitted only with prior arrangement.
- Other Activities: The facility also hosts other events, such as off-road activities, often reserving the range for this purpose on the first full weekend of each month.
