All about Northern Arizona Shooting Range

Facilities and Ranges

The range is primarily an outdoor facility, offering diverse shooting opportunities for different firearm types and disciplines. Key features and ranges include:

  • Pistol/Rifle Ranges: The facility has multiple bays dedicated to pistol and rifle shooting. Permitted calibers generally range from air guns up to large rifle calibers, though .50 BMG is prohibited. Muzzleloaders and shotguns shooting slugs are typically allowed.

  • Shotgun Ranges: The NASR includes facilities for clay target shooting, featuring:

    • Multiple Trap fields (at least five).

    • A Skeet field (at least one).

    • A Sporting Clays course.

  • Archery Range: There is an archery area with bag targets set at various distances (e.g., 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 yards), although only field tips are permitted, not broadheads.

  • Amenities: The club provides target stands, cardboard backers, and tape for paper targets. Shooters must bring their own firearms and ammunition, as the club does not offer rentals or sales.

Services and Operations

  • Staffing: The range is operated by volunteers, including certified Range Safety Officers (RSOs) who maintain safety.

  • Public Access: The range is open to the public on designated days (typically Friday and Saturday during winter months for rifle/pistol, and Saturdays for shotgun/archery), though hours change seasonally. Public shooters pay a day-use fee and sign a waiver.

  • Membership: Membership offers advantages, including waiver of the daily range fee and discounts on shotgun activities like sporting clays, trap, and skeet.

  • Training & Hunter Education: The range hosts the mandatory hands-on field days and exams for the Arizona Hunter Education Program. They also offer NRA-certified beginner shotgun classes in the summer.

  • Hunters' Sight-In Days: The range often offers free rifle and archery sight-in days in the fall to prepare hunters for the season.

  • Group Events: The facility can accommodate large groups and various events, with pricing determined by the specifics of the event.

  • Safety Rules: Basic safety rules are strictly enforced, including cased or holstered firearms when entering/exiting, muzzles pointed downrange, and no handling of firearms or ammunition during a "Cease Fire." Rapid fire is generally allowed if it can be done safely with all rounds hitting the target. Drawing from a holster is typically not permitted during public hours.
