All about Monarto Metallic Silhouette Rifle Club

Facilities:
The MMSRC operates within the larger Monarto Shooting Complex, which offers diverse ranges. Specifically for the MMSRC, the club has access to several ranges (Ranges 1, 2, 3, and 4 are frequently mentioned in their programs). These ranges are equipped with both paper and steel targets. The complex itself features undercover firing points for metallic silhouette shooting out to 600 yards (though the club focuses on 500m) and benchrest shooting to 200 yards.
Ranges and Disciplines:
The club is primarily focused on Metallic Silhouette shooting, which involves knocking down steel targets shaped like Chickens, Pigs, Turkeys, and Rams. These targets are placed at varying distances depending on the rifle class. All rifle metallic silhouette shooting is done from a standing, unsupported position, with the rifle fired from the shoulder and no rest or support.
Key metallic silhouette distances:
- Air Rifle: Chickens at 20 yards, Pigs at 30 yards, Turkeys at 36 yards, Rams at 45 yards.
- Rimfire (22 LR): Chickens at 40 meters, Pigs at 60 meters, Turkeys at 77 meters, Rams at 100 meters.
- Centrefire: Chickens at 200 meters, Pigs at 300 meters, Turkeys at 385 meters, Rams at 500 meters.
In addition to Metallic Silhouette, the MMSRC also offers:
- Field Rifle: This discipline involves shooting at paper targets from various hunting-simulating positions (e.g., Offhand, Standing Post, Sitting Post, rapid fire) using rimfire or centrefire rifles. Rifle slings are permitted.
- 3-Positional (3P): Similar to Field Rifle, but targets are engaged from prone, offhand, and sitting positions without posts or rests.
- Fly Shoot: A long-range precision shooting match developed in Australia, where the target has the outline of a blowfly in the center. Shooters aim to hit the "blowie" at distances of 500 meters for centrefire and 200 yards for rimfire rifles.
- Air-Rifle, Shotgun, and Handgun events: These are run on a less regular basis but are part of the club's program.
- Cowboy Lever Action Silhouette: This discipline involves shooting at silhouette targets with lever action rifles, with targets at 50m, 100m, 150m, and 200m (for centrefire) or 25m, 50m, 75m, and 100m (for rimfire).
- Long Range Benchrest Silhouette: This discipline involves shooting at silhouette targets from a benchrest position.
Services and Membership:
The Monarto Metallic Silhouette Rifle Club welcomes visitors and new members. They aim to provide a supportive environment for individuals of all skill levels.
- "Come and Try" opportunities: The club allows individuals without a firearms license to visit and try shooting under the direct supervision of instructors, provided they have photo ID and are not prohibited from using a firearm.
- Firearms Licence Training: The club conducts approved courses for individuals seeking various firearms licenses (e.g., A1, B1, H1). They can also arrange club training for firearms license holders needing endorsement to shoot in clubs.
- Membership: Membership of the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (SSAA) is a mandatory condition for joining the MMSRC, as it provides the required liability insurance cover. The MMSRC offers family memberships, meaning one membership fee can cover a spouse and dependent children. Junior members (over 10 years old) are also welcomed.
- Events and Competitions: The club has a regular program of club shoots, including events for various metallic silhouette disciplines (rimfire, centrefire, scoped, extended long range). They also host interclub competitions, State Titles, and even National Metallic Silhouette Rifle Titles.
- Club Firearms: Club firearms are generally available during registered club competitions for visitors and members to use under supervision.
- Ammunition: Ammunition can sometimes be organized through the club if required.
The club emphasizes sportsmanship, camaraderie, and the pursuit of excellence in shooting disciplines. They have a heat policy where scheduled events may be canceled if the forecast temperature in Adelaide is 38 degrees Celsius or higher, though the range typically remains open for member use. At least two members must be present to use the range on non-scheduled weekdays, subject to prior approval.
