All about Lower Trent Valley Fish and Game Club
Facilities: The club boasts a wide variety of facilities to cater to diverse shooting disciplines:
- Outdoor Ranges: They offer multiple outdoor ranges for both rifles and handguns, with varying distances from 25 to 200 yards. This includes several dedicated IPSC (International Practical Shooting Confederation) ranges, which are popular for dynamic shooting sports.
- Shotgun Sports: Enthusiasts of shotgun sports can enjoy a skeet and trap field, as well as sporting clays, which feature targets simulating various game bird movements.
- Archery Ranges: For archers, there are four distinct ranges. This includes a multi-target butt range extending to 80 yards, a lower 3D target range, an upper 3D target range, and a raised deck target range also with 3D targets.
- Indoor Facilities: The club also provides indoor facilities for small bore rifles, handguns, and archery, accessible to members.
The facilities have undergone continuous upgrades and expansions over the years, including an increase in the club's acreage.
Ranges: More specifically, the outdoor ranges include:
- Range 1: Offers shooting positions at 25 and 50 yards.
- Range 2: Provides shooting at 50, 100, and 200 yards. There have been discussions about potentially expanding this range to even greater distances.
- Ranges 3, 4, and 5: Primarily used as IPSC ranges, ideal for practicing with closer targets.
- Most outdoor ranges are equipped with steel targets for member use.
For archery, in addition to the outdoor ranges, there are indoor options. One option involves rolling a full-size archery target into one of the indoor bays, and a second option, available during winter months (November 1 to March 31) on Sunday mornings in the main hall upstairs, has a 125 fps limit and specific arrow size requirements. Crossbow users need to bring their own certified targets.
Services and Activities: The Lower Trent Valley Fish and Game Club offers a range of services and hosts various events:
- Competitive Events: The club is a hub for competitive shooting, hosting events such as IPSC, ICORE (International Confederation of Revolver Enthusiasts), ORPS (Ontario Rimfire Precision Series), and Cowboy Action shooting. Precision Rimfire rifle competitions are held monthly and are often open to non-members.
- Instruction and Safety: A mandatory safety course is required for all new members aged 18 and older, including all licensed family members on a family membership. This ensures a safe environment for all participants.
- Community Engagement: The club is committed to community involvement, making charitable donations to local organizations and advocating on issues related to firearm legislation. They also host family-friendly events such as "Youth Day," which often includes activities like face painting, fishing in a stocked pond, and rifle shooting for children.
- Membership: Membership to the club is open to individuals passionate about shooting sports. They offer both single and family memberships. A sign-up fee for a waiting list is typically applied to the full membership fee upon joining. Canadian Shooting Sports Association (CSSA) shooting insurance is mandatory and can be included in the membership fee if a member does not already possess it. The club manages membership applications electronically.
The club emphasizes a welcoming and inclusive community where members of all skill levels can enjoy a variety of shooting and archery activities. Safety is paramount, with strict adherence to range rules and the presence of designated Range Officers during shooting events.
