All about Grand Island Rifle Club
Facilities and Ranges:
The Grand Island Rifle Club provides both indoor and outdoor shooting facilities:
- Indoor Range: This is a modern, heated facility with 7 lanes designed for shooting at 50 feet. It accommodates handguns up to .45 Win. Mag. The indoor range also features enclosed heated viewing and shooting areas, making it suitable for various calibers and firearms. It's also utilized for meetings and classroom training. Access to the indoor range is generally restricted to specific days when a range officer is available.
- Outdoor Range: This multi-purpose range extends up to 200 meters and includes a covered firing line for rifle, pistol, and black powder shooting. It offers numerous shooting benches starting at 25 yards and extending further.
- 50-Yard Range: A popular spot, particularly for pistol shooters, this range is equipped with lights for late evening shooting.
- Archery Area: The club has recently added a dedicated area for archery and bow hunters, located just south of the clubhouse.
The club generally permits approved targets such as paper or clay. Exploding targets, including "tannerite" or other similar substances, as well as glass or concrete objects, are strictly prohibited.
Services:
The Grand Island Rifle Club offers various services, primarily aimed at its members and in promoting shooting sports:
- Membership: The club operates as a private, members-only facility. Membership is by application only and requires a new member safety orientation meeting. These meetings are scheduled several times a year. To be considered for membership, applicants typically need a valid Driver's License or a State Issued ID card, and a current and valid Concealed Handgun Permit or a Nebraska Firearm Purchase Certificate. The club is also a 100% National Rifle Association (NRA) member club, meaning continuous NRA membership is required for acceptance and retention of membership.
- Safety Orientation: A mandatory 90-minute safety orientation meeting covers all club safety rules and regulations. This is a crucial step in the membership process, with applications made available during these meetings. The Board of Directors reviews applications and votes on approval.
- Hunter Education Classes: The club generally offers various hunter education classes throughout the year, including Firearm Hunter, Bowhunter Hunter Education classroom courses, and numerous Hunt Safe sessions.
- Youth Classes: Beginner and advanced youth shooting classes are also offered, demonstrating the club's commitment to fostering the next generation of shooters.
- Women's First-Step Class: This specialized class caters to women new to shooting.
- Range Access: Members typically have access to the outdoor range 7 days a week, provided there isn't a scheduled event. Specific shooting hours are in place, usually from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Access to the outdoor range is via a key issued to members, which cannot be loaned or transferred.
- Guest Policy: Members can bring immediate family members living in the same household as often as they like, with the member responsible for their conduct. Other specific guests can be brought twice, and they must remain with the member at all times. After two visits, guests are encouraged to apply for membership themselves.
- Calendar of Events: The club maintains a calendar of events, which members are encouraged to check for scheduled events that might impact range availability.
The Grand Island Rifle Club is a community-focused organization that provides a comprehensive and safe environment for shooting enthusiasts in the Grand Island area, promoting responsible firearm ownership and skill development.
