All about Chester Rod & Gun Club
Ranges and Disciplines
The clubs feature extensive ranges to support both marksmanship and action-oriented shooting sports:
- Rifle Ranges: Dedicated outdoor rifle ranges, commonly including distances of 100 yards. These are used for traditional rifle practice and competition.
- Pistol/Firearm Ranges: Facilities typically include short-range outdoor pistol bays, often at 25-yard and 50-yard distances. Some clubs also offer indoor pistol ranges.
- Action & Plate Shooting: Ranges are set up to host dynamic pistol shooting competitions such as Steel Challenge and Action Shooting (often involving USPSA or IDPA rules), as well as Bowling Pin Shoots and steel plate racks.
- Clays Shooting: Comprehensive clay target facilities are available, including Skeet, Trap, Trap Doubles, and Handicap Trap. These activities are often open to the public during scheduled hours.
- Archery: Both indoor and outdoor archery ranges are common, with some clubs offering specialized 3D Archery courses.
- Competition: Leagues and matches are held regularly for disciplines like Bullseye League and the various action shooting sports.
Services and Membership
The Chester Rod & Gun Clubs are generally private, member-run organizations that prioritize safety and youth involvement.
- Membership: The clubs are member-based, requiring membership to use most of the range facilities outside of public clay shooting events. They offer various membership tiers, including individual, family, student, and senior citizen. Active Duty Military often receive free membership.
- New Member Process: A formal process is required for new members, which typically involves an application fee, providing documentation of legal firearm eligibility (such as a state-issued firearms license), and attending mandatory New Member Orientation and Safety Seminar sessions. Qualification sessions may be required to use specific ranges (e.g., indoor pistol).
- Training and Education: Services include conducting Hunter Safety Courses and running a Junior League (Rifle and Archery instruction) for youth aged 8 to 18 to promote safe firearm and archery handling.
- Clubhouse: A clubhouse serves as the central meeting point, often hosting monthly membership meetings and sometimes offering meal services to support club fundraising efforts.
- Volunteerism: Members are highly encouraged to volunteer their time for club maintenance and event support, often with incentives like discounts on membership renewal.
- Amenities: Facilities generally include a clubhouse, meeting areas, and well-maintained shooting grounds. However, the clubs typically do not rent firearms, sell ammunition, or provide protective gear to members or guests, who are expected to bring their own equipment.
