All about Campbell River Gun Club
Facilities and Ranges:
The CRGC boasts an extensive outdoor range located about a 15-minute drive west of Campbell River. It includes a variety of ranges to accommodate different shooting disciplines and distances:
- 25 Meter Pistol Range: Dedicated for handgun shooting.
- 50 Meter Pistol Range: Another option for pistol shooters, often with a covered firing area.
- 200 Meter Rifle Range: Suitable for rifles, pistols, and shotguns. At times, this range may be closed for ongoing improvements.
- 600 Yard Rifle Range: A long-range facility for rifles, pistols, and shotguns, catering to longer-distance shooting.
- IPSC Alleys (7 bays): These are specialized bays designed for International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) and other action shooting disciplines, allowing for dynamic and movement-based shooting scenarios.
- Trap Range (4 houses): Dedicated shotgun ranges for trap shooting, available on specific days.
- Indoor Range: Features 6 positions for shooting .22 caliber rifles and pistols at 20 yards, and is heated for comfort.
The sheer size of the facility allows the club to host multiple competitions simultaneously without interfering with general member use. The club has future aspirations to expand further, with plans for an Olympic Pistol Range, a Skeet Range, and a new clubhouse/indoor range on the same property.
Services:
The Campbell River Gun Club provides several services to its members and the broader community:
- Member Orientation: A mandatory orientation program ensures all members are familiar with the club's safety rules and range policies before they gain access to the ranges. This also includes the process for purchasing an annual gate key.
- Guest Policy: Members are permitted to bring guests, with certain limitations (e.g., typically limited to 3 visits per year per guest). Members are responsible for supervising their guests and ensuring they are aware of all safety rules.
- Safety and Supervision: The club emphasizes safety, with clear rules regarding firearm handling, target use, and cease-fire procedures. Range Safety Officers (RSOs) are present to enforce rules and ensure a safe shooting environment. Alcohol and cannabis consumption are strictly prohibited on the ranges.
- Competitions and Sections: The club actively organizes and supports various shooting disciplines through dedicated sections, including:
- Action Shooting (IPSC): Focuses on dynamic and competitive pistol shooting.
- Biathlon
- Black Powder
- Centerfire Rifle
- Cowboy Action
- Multi-Gun
- Pistol
- Smallbore Rifle
- Trap
- Hours of Operation: The outdoor ranges are generally open from dawn till dusk, seven days a week, for members. The indoor range and specific trap days may have different schedules, which are usually available via a club calendar.
- Accident Reporting: The club has clear procedures for reporting any accidents to the Executive Range Officer or Club President.
The Campbell River Gun Club is a well-established and comprehensive shooting facility that prioritizes safety, provides a diverse range of shooting opportunities, and fosters a community for firearm enthusiasts on Vancouver Island.
