Description

All about Brisbane Sporting Clays

Facility: The club is set within picturesque surroundings at Belmont, a short drive from Brisbane's CBD and the airport. It's a not-for-profit, community-spirited sporting club with world-class facilities and equipment. The grounds span approximately 40 acres, utilizing the natural terrain with gullies and high mounds to position shooting points, which adds to the variety and challenge of the sport. The club also features a large clubhouse with a full bar, kitchen, BBQ facilities, and an expansive balcony overlooking the ranges, making it suitable for group bookings, social events, and corporate functions.

Ranges: Brisbane Sporting Clays specializes in the discipline of sporting clays, which is designed to simulate field hunting conditions. Unlike other clay target disciplines where targets follow predictable trajectories, sporting clays uses variable target sizes, speeds, and angles of flight. The club's extensive grounds allow for diverse target presentations, including targets thrown among trees and rocks, uphill, downhill, incoming, outgoing, and overhead. They utilize a variety of clay targets, from standard 120mm clays to smaller "midi" and "mini" targets, as well as specialized "rabbit" clays that roll along the ground and "battue" targets that twist in flight. Targets are thrown as singles or "doubles" (either on report or simultaneous release).

While primarily focused on sporting clays, the broader Brisbane Gun Club also caters to other shotgun disciplines, including:

  • DTL (Down The Line) / Trap: With monthly competitions and practice days.
  • American Skeet: The club has multiple American Skeet layouts.
  • ISSF Trench / Universal Trench: These are more challenging, Olympic disciplines.

Services: Brisbane Sporting Clays offers a comprehensive range of services for both experienced shooters and newcomers:

  • Come and Try Program: This is a popular offering for unlicensed individuals who want to experience clay target shooting for the first time. It includes coaching from qualified instructors, all necessary equipment (firearm, ammunition, targets, safety gear), and a safety briefing. Participants must present valid photo identification and wear closed-in shoes.
  • Coaching: Accredited coaches are available to provide instruction for all skill levels, from beginners learning safe firearm handling to experienced shooters looking to refine their technique.

  • Competitions: The club regularly hosts various competitions throughout the year. For sporting clays, they hold monthly competitions, and they also host larger state and national championships, sometimes in conjunction with Sporting Clays Australia. The Brisbane Gun Club, as a whole, hosts monthly competitions for Skeet, ISSF Trench, Universal Trench, and Trap shooting.
  • Group Bookings: The club can accommodate group bookings for social or corporate events, providing a unique and memorable experience.

More: Brisbane Sporting Clays is committed to providing a safe, friendly, and inclusive environment for target shooting. They emphasize safety with strict range rules, including requirements for firearms to be unloaded with actions open when not in use, proper muzzle control, and limits on ammunition load and shotgun gauge. The club encourages a strong sense of camaraderie among its members and welcomes individuals of all ages and skill levels, promoting the sport as an enjoyable outdoor family activity. Their commitment to excellence is evident in their world-class facilities and their role in hosting significant shooting events.
