Description

All about Border Lane Shooting Association

Facility and Ranges:

The association operates an outdoor shooting range. Its operational hours are generally from one hour after sunrise to one hour before sundown, Monday through Friday. On Sundays and certain statutory holidays (including Good Friday, Easter Monday, Thanksgiving Day, Remembrance Day, and Christmas Day), shooting is permitted from noon until one hour before sunset. A key safety rule for the outdoor range is that absolutely no shooting is allowed when farmers, farm equipment, vehicles, or persons are directly north or east of the range. Additionally, shooting must cease if any Border Patrol vehicles or aircraft are sighted.

The range is primarily for use by members and their invited guests. Guests must read and sign the range rules and be supervised by their host member during shooting activities. All members and guests are required to sign the range log book upon arrival.

Services:

The Border Lane Shooting Association focuses on providing a safe and regulated environment for recreational shooting. While specific services like firearm rentals or formal classes are not explicitly detailed for this association, general practices for such clubs include:

  • Range Access: Providing members with access to their outdoor shooting facilities.
  • Safety Enforcement: Strict adherence to a comprehensive set of safety rules, including:
    • Proving firearms unloaded at a safety area immediately upon arrival and prior to departure.
    • No handling of ammunition in safety areas.
    • Transporting firearms in a case or holster, not hand-carried, from safety areas to firing lines.
    • Loading firearms only at the firing line (unless holster firing downrange).
    • Mandatory eye and ear protection on firing lines.
    • Removing firearms requiring maintenance from the firing line to a safety area.
    • Appointing a Range Officer (RO) when more than one shooter is present, with the RO responsible for safety commands.
    • Ensuring all firearms are unloaded and not handled during a cease-fire.
    • Keeping handgun muzzles pointed downrange and long gun muzzles pointed up when moving.
    • Keeping firearm actions open except when shooting or holstering.
    • Prohibiting shooting at target stands, props, cans, bottles, or anything that could cause dangerous debris or ricochets.
    • Zero tolerance for horseplay, careless firearm handling, or any other distractions during shooting.
    • Strict prohibition of persons impaired by alcohol or drugs handling firearms.
  • Emergency Procedures: Members are instructed to dial 911 in case of emergency.
  • Site Management: Members are responsible for raising a red flag at the gate upon entering and signing into the log book, as well as lowering the flag and locking the gate if they are the last to leave.

Membership:

Becoming a member involves a fee and requires prospective members to read, fill out, and sign both the association's rules and membership forms. The membership fee is $150 per member, with an additional $25 for a spouse or any children under 18 years old residing in the same household. These forms can be dropped off at a designated location in Altona, Manitoba, or faxed. Payments can be mailed or processed via PayPal.

Events and Competitions:

While the association generally welcomes new members and promotes shooting, specific regular events or competitions hosted directly by the Border Lane Shooting Association are not widely publicized. However, shooting associations often participate in or facilitate participation in various shooting disciplines and competitions, such as Cowboy Action Shooting, which involves specific types of firearms and scenarios. Potential members interested in competitive shooting would typically inquire directly with the association about any ongoing or planned events.
