Hi….I’m a first time gun buyer or should I say I would like to start purchasing guns for home defense. ….what should I expect from the gun show. Do I need to do or bring anything with me?

First do some online research to get a clearer picture of what type of firearm you want for “home defense”, revolver, semi auto, shotgun or what? Who’s going to use it, are there kids in the house and what training do you and the family have? Take some training offered by the NRA and most good ranges (Ie Elite Shooting Sports in manassas). If you don’t want to invest time in getting trained and go to the range at least once a month Pepper spray might be a better alternative (you can buy it at the gunshow). If you do buy a firearm, buy a small gunsafe as well, its as important as the firearm for family safety.

You’ll need ID’s, plural to buy any firearm, virginia drivers licence and other forms of id. Cash or credit cards, most dealers don’t like AMEX and a clean background which will be checked against the data base by the seller.

Finally go to bluebook gun values online and check the market prices of the firearms you’re interested in. Visit several dealers to check prices on anything you’re interested in and don’t be shy about negotiating. It’s easy to end up paying more then MSRP if you haven’t done due diligence.

      Good Luck
